Our Story
rFREDai is a research institute offering innovative solutions to estimating unrecorded intangible assets to improve stock valuation tools, empirical finance research, and education. We apply machine learning and other computer science tools to massive textual data and other publicly available information. With a focus on creativity and excellence, we customize our services to the needs of portfolio managers, analysts, business managers, educators, and students.
The founding member, Hyuna Park, is an empirical finance researcher and educator with over twenty years of experience in data analytics. She is Professor of Finance and Herb Kurz Chair in Finance and Risk Management at the City University of New York - Brooklyn College. Using SAS, Python, CRSP/Compustat, and various other software and databases, she has developed valuation tools for unrecorded intangible assets to improve stock valuation methods. Major data sources include over 1 TB of digitized financial statements including eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) tags and textual information from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) system. Her research on intangible assets was a semi-finalist for the Best Paper Award in Investments at the Financial Management Association (FMA) 2015 annual meeting. Her hedge fund research received the 2007 Best Paper Award at the China International Conference in Finance (CICF). She is also an innovative educator developing experiential learning programs in finance and computer science using Bloomberg Terminal and the SEC EDGAR XBRL data in collaboration with alumni analysts, portfolio managers, and computer scientists.
